Keanu Reeves and Alexandra Grant are nine years apart

With their couple premiere in November 2019, Keanu Reeves (56) and Alexandra Grant (47) re-stimulated the discussion about the optimal age difference between couples. But what does science actually say about the perfect “distance” between men and women?

The age difference (also) determines the duration of a relationship

First of all: Even if many say that age is not decisive in a relationship, the results of a study by Emory University in Atlanta confirm that the age difference is decisive if the relationship is to last as long as possible.

In total, data from 3,000 people were examined, which showed that the greater the age difference, the higher the risk of separation. With an age difference of five years the separation rate increases by 18 percent, with ten years by 39 percent and with an age difference of 20 years the risk of separation increases by as much as 95 percent.

The ideal age difference for a long relationship

The answer for the longest possible relationship? The partners should be of the same age.

Why? A deciding factor is a functioning love life in a relationship, as Fran Walfish, a psychotherapist from Beverly Hills, says. In women, the love drive becomes more pronounced with increasing age, while romantic function in men deteriorates with increasing age. Thus, an extremely large age difference can negatively affect love life. (Pssst: You want to know what age is the best for love? Here ‘s the answer.)
